Scripture Reading: 2 Timothy 1:5 (NLT)
12th March - 18th March, 2018
‘I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. And I know that same faith continues strong in you.’
Last Sunday was Mothering Sunday in the UK, and we celebrated mothers for being real champions, stars and true difference makers. Mothers actually collaborate with God to raise and nurture the next generation. Without their commitment and their impact, there would be no future for the human race. Evangelist Billy Graham famously remarked ‘only God Himself fully appreciates the influence of a Christian mother in the moulding of character in her children’.
If you read the whole text of our main Scripture reading, you will realise that it depicts the grace of God towards Timothy. Timothy had a questionable background; his father was a Gentile unbeliever, but his mother was a Jewish believer, as was his grandmother. It is forbidden for a Jewish person to marry a Gentile but the Scriptures do not tell us the circumstances surrounding the relationship between Timothy’s Father (whose name was not mentioned) and his Mother Eunice. Coming from a background like this, it is very possible that Timothy would have been scorned and ridiculed among his mates. His Mother may also have been scorned by her fellow Jews. Perhaps this was why Apostle Paul addressed the subject of timidity and reminded Timothy that we have been given a Spirit of love, power and a sound mind (2Timothy 1: 6-7).
In Timothy’s story, we see that God chooses to reveal His grace through what the world may despise and condemn. God is not ashamed of our backgrounds. When we yield ourselves to Him, He uses us and blesses us so that we can be a blessing to others around us. This is why mothers are so important in God’s divine agenda for humanity. Many mothers have no idea the seeds of greatness that they have birthed and raised; but as they yield themselves to the Lord, they are divinely enabled to inspire and equip their children for greatness.
There was greatness locked up within Timothy despite his background, and it was his Mother (not his Father) who began to stir it up with the Word of God. We see that the resilience of Timothy’s Mother, Eunice, also came from her own godly mother Lois. Thus, the legacy of godly Lois was imparted to several generations after her. Apostle Paul notes that Eunice taught Timothy the Scriptures right from early childhood (2 Timothy 3: 15), and he goes on to note that Scripture equips us for every good work (2 Timothy 3: 17).
As parents, and specifically as mothers, here are a few things you must prioritise:
1. Teach your children the Word of God, the ways of God and the will of God.
2. Show your children who they are through the Word of God; don’t just say it, show them in the Scripture.
3. Allow your children to see Christ in you.
As a result, our children will develop genuine faith (2 Timothy 1: 5), they will embrace the life of discipleship (Acts 16: 1), their godly character will speak for them (Acts 16: 2), and they will emerge as leaders in their generation (Philippians 2: 19- 22).
Motherhood is a collaboration with God to raise generals for His glory…!

Prayer: Dear Father God, I thank You for loving me with a love that is deeper and more eternal than maternal love. I thank You for my Mother, for the Mothers in my life and for the gift of motherhood. I am grateful for the joy, love and care that they bring. I ask Lord that You replenish their health, strength and focus on You, so that they and I can continue to be a blessing to the younger generation that You have placed in our care, in Jesus’ Name. Amen!
